I went out to pick a fight with anyone
Bengalis during the Ramadan fast are notoriously irritable. It's hot, they are hungry and thirsty, and they have to get ready for Eid. (Eid is the biggest religious holiday of the year, on par with our Christmas.) On the bus ride back from the north I seen 4 or 5 fist fights along the road as we passed.
We took the bus from the ferry crossing to Dhaka, but the bus broke down, and though they got it going again we had to switch busses in Mymensingh. As we moved in the mass from one bus to the other a man spit a big wad of gross white stuff on the pants of Poritush, the Maundi man escorting me back to Dhaka. "That man just spit on you!" I exclaimed to him. Poritush just shook his head and went about getting us good seats on the bus. Later he explained that the man was trying to pick a fight, then if Poritush engaged in an argument someone else would pick his pocket. He smiled at my outrage. "It's just the way things are."
